HOPE

A night piece by nebel nebel & F. Wiesel

F. Wiesel and nebel nebel embark on a joint mission to the moon: Combining puppetry, robotics, and live performance, the two collectives combine their shared passion for detail, science fiction, and innovative storytelling as a means to utilize the theater as a forum for negotiating social structures. Somewhere between exhibition booth and video game, HOPE turns the moon into a stage inviting the audience to a collective exploration.

City dwellers seek refuge in urban gardens, while others annex entire countries; some 60 years after the first moon landing, space remains a stage for power fantasies. Once carried across oceans by sailing ships, this idea now soars through the endless expanse in rockets: the age-old notion that everything can be conquered, surveyed, and exploited.
How can we escape a territorial mindset that reaches all the way to the stars?

«The first man who, having enclosed a piece of ground, bethought himself of saying This is mine, and found people simple enough to believe him, was the real founder of civil society. From how many crimes, wars and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows, "Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody.»

(Jean‐Jacques Rousseau: Discourse on the Origin of Inequality)

«Maybe you can’t own it here… but you can own it up there.»
